The phases of the Moon

Depending on the Moon's position with respect to the Sun, the Moon is seen from Earth in a different phase of illumination; the mean states are called the phases of the Moon.

In the phases of the Moon cycle there is a short moment when the Moon is not visible at all; this is the phase called "New Moon". It happens when the Moon is aproximately located between the Sun and the Earth. The illuminated part of the Moon faces the Sun, being invisible from Earth.

The phase in which the Moon is seen from Earth completely illuminated is called "Full Moon"; then the Earth is located between the Sun and the Moon (the three objects are aligned again), and the visible side of the Moon is completely illuminated.
